My body has been telling me that it is time for some cleansing. Luckily, I recently stumbled upon It Starts With Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. This book breaks down the science behind food and our bodies using analogies that are easy for anyone to understand. The book presents a simple 30 day challenge designed to restore the health that we have lost (even if we haven’t realized that we have lost it) by eating the highly processed and refined foods in the Standard American Diet. While the plan may be simple, it is certainly not easy. The challenge consists of eliminating all forms of grain, legumes, dairy, and sugar from our diet and concentrating on choosing healthy vegetables, meats, fruits, nuts seeds, and oils. Grains, legumes, dairy, and sugar are present in many of the products that we consider to be daily staples. By eliminating them, and their negative effects on our bodies, we can restore a healthy metabolism, heal the digestive tract, boost our immune systems, and end cravings.
For breakfast on my first day of the Whole30 challenge, I enjoyed two poached eggs, half of an avocado, and broccoli rabe sauteed in coconut oil with garlic.
